Towards a Future Where Nature and Cities Coexist

— Green Infrastructure Development and Management through Citizen Collaboration —

Research Vision

Natural environments play an essential role in reducing environmental impacts and improving quality of life in cities. How can we better integrate the diverse functions of parks, green spaces, and waterfront areas into urban environments? Drawing on the concepts of ecosystem services and green infrastructure, we seek to understand the value of urban nature and explore sustainable approaches to urban development in which cities and natural environments coexist.
We assess the diverse roles of ecosystem services in urban spaces and investigate approaches to urban planning and design that contribute to climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and improved quality of life. We also explore collaborative approaches through which residents, local governments, and other stakeholders can conserve, use, and manage natural environments. By integrating the multiple values of nature into urban planning and empowering citizens to actively protect and nurture their local environments, we aim to create cities where nature and everyday life can thrive together.

Research Fields & Activities

Riverfronts

Lower Toyokawa River Basin
We investigate residents’ perceptions, attitudes, and disaster preparedness behaviors related to traditional open levees (kasumitei) and waterfront spaces in the lower Toyokawa River basin.

Urban Reservoirs

Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture
We analyze the environmental conditions and surrounding land use of reservoirs distributed throughout the city, assessing their characteristics and multifunctional roles.

Urban Retention Ponds

Kashiwanoha Aqua Terrace
We investigate the social and cultural functions of stormwater retention ponds as urban waterfront spaces through a comparative study of Kashiwanoha Aqua Terrace and conventional retention ponds.

Forest Ecosystems

Municipalities and Prefectures Across Japan
We visualize the supply and demand of forest ecosystem services and explore approaches to forest management that consider wood production and other ecosystem functions.
