Towards Recovery that Rebuilds Lives and Community Connections
— Disaster Recovery Planning Linking Evacuation, Temporary Housing, and Livelihood Reconstruction —
Research Vision
Large-scale disasters affect not only housing and urban infrastructure but also people's everyday lives and the social connections that sustain communities. What kinds of recovery systems are needed to help disaster-affected people rebuild their lives with security and restore their connections to local communities? We focus on housing transitions from evacuation through temporary accommodation to permanent housing, alongside the rebuilding of local communities, to explore recovery planning approaches that support people's lives and livelihoods.
We investigate the provision and selection of temporary housing, including emergency temporary housing and private rental accommodation, and examine how living environments influence the process of rebuilding lives. We also study spatial transformations in disaster-affected urban areas and the recovery of local businesses. By emphasizing continuity from pre-disaster conditions through post-disaster recovery and integrating housing policy, urban planning, and community development, we seek approaches to recovery that support diverse pathways to rebuilding lives while restoring and sustaining community connections.
